The first thing to note about traveling in Central Asia is that most regions, especially the cities and towns, are more relaxed in their approach to Islam than their neighboring areas to the south of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is a Muslim region, so it’s important to be cautious in certain areas. Long-sleeved shirts and shorts are fine for both sexes in the city, but should you visit any mosques with active worshippers, everyone should wear trousers that do not go below the knee and tops that cover shoulders. Ladies should also wear an asymmetrical head scarf. Throughout this tour we are going to remote areas which are rarely visited by tourists. The local people are very modest in their attire and thus you’re likely to be more comfortable with your dress.
Language & Religion
Tajikistan’s official language is Tajik. Russian is used regularly in business and communication.
A majority of the population adhere to Sunni Islam, with the minority of people who adhere to Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.
Food and drink
This tour concentrates on soups and meats. In more remote and higher altitude areas vegetables can be difficult to come by. There are plenty of dried fruits and nuts to sample.
The alcohol choices are limited to beer or vodka. Anyone looking to sample something different, such as Scotch or Gin – should purchase the alcohol duty-free and bring it along. Mixer drinks like tonic water can be extremely difficult to find, though.
