Malaria is also able to be seen in Tajikistan which is why it’s best to talk with your doctor local for advice on immunisations.

Cultural Sensitivity

You are likely to meet locals, each with their own unique customs and traditions. It is your responsibility to show respect and consideration to the locals. You can always count on your guides or tour-leaders to help you.

It is first important to note that Central Asia has a more flexible attitude towards Islam than its neighboring countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, it should also be kept in mind that it’s technically an Muslim area, so a little bit of caution should be applied at certain locations. T-shirts and long shorts are fine for both sexes in the city, but when visiting mosques that are active, everybody should wear trousers that are below the knee, and tops that cover shoulders. The use of a head scarf is advised for females. While on this tour, we’ll be traveling in remote locations that are not frequently visited by tourists. Locals are extremely modest in their dress and thus you’re likely to feel more comfortable in a conservative dress code too.

Language & Religion

The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik. Russian is still used regularly for business and communication.

The majority of the people adhere to Sunni Islam, with the small minority being followers of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.

Food and drinks

The food served on the tour tends mainly on soups, meat and potatoes. Vegetables can be difficult to locate in remote areas or at higher altitudes. However, there’s plenty of dried nuts and dried fruits that are available to try.

For alcohol, your options are mostly limited to vodka or beer. Anyone looking for something else – Scotch or Gin for instance – needs to buy it duty free and then bring it to the store. Mixer drinks such as tonic water aren’t easy to locate, however.
