Don’t cut any files. We quite often meet clients who cut one directory and paste into another disk when something goes wrong in ways that your directory just isn’t inside the source disk nor copied in the target disk. It appears as if something BUG and happens every so often. So for important data, we advise to repeat it in the target disk and delete your directory files in the source disk as long as it is all totally OK. Don’t conveniently risk losing any data.
As in file deletion by the operating-system, data on a disk aren’t fully erased during every high-level format. Instead, the region on the disk containing the info is only marked as available, and retains the old data until it is overwritten. When the disk is formatted using a different file system as opposed to the one which previously existed on the partition, some data could possibly be overwritten that couldn’t survive when the same file system was used. However, under some file systems (e.g., NTFS, but not FAT), the file indexes (for example $MFTs under NTFS, inodes under ext2/3, etc.) might not be written towards the exact same locations. If the partition dimensions are increased, even FAT file systems will overwrite more data at the outset of that new partition.
